A new beginner string instrument course directed by Rebecca Hooper and Helen Kruger. Their combined experience of teaching, performing and directing string projects in Perth and the UK make this new venture a must for anyone looking for string lessons for their child.

THE COURSE

The Perth String Project is a sequential program which is firmly rooted in strong musicianship development from the very outset. The course draws on teaching methods from around the globe, forming a new, tailor made system for group lessons with parental support. Although it has a background rooted in experience and research, the actual classes take the form of music games and singing, making it fun and engaging- the best way for anyone to learn!

First Year: An engaging course with a focus on musicianship, singing and musical games for ages 4-5.5.

Second Year: Students begin Violin, Viola or Cello in a welcoming group setting. Instruments are available for hire.

Third Year: Students progress to the quartet program.

The students will have the opportunity to take part in informal end of term performances and will also be invited to Australian Baroque’s family concerts throughout the year.

TIMES & ELIGIBILITY

The course runs on Saturday mornings, in Bassendean.

Year 1: 9am-9:45am

Year 2: 10am-11am

Years 3&4: Quartet sessions and paired lessons at various times

Eligibility:

Year 1: ages 4 - 6

Year 2: ages 5.5 - 7

Years 3&4: ages 7+

HELEN KRUGER

Helen is a Perth violinist and has returned from almost 20 years in the UK, studying at the Royal Academy of Music(RAM), London and working with the leading early music ensembles and orchestras throughout the UK, Europe and Australia. Helen performed with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment(OAE) for 13 years. She was the Director of the RAM First String Experience chamber program for 7 years and a founding director of the South Hampstead String Program. Helen was a core member of the OAE education team for 10 years, delivering cutting edge projects throughout the UK. She was the Founding Director of a music improvisation program for the homeless for 2 years, before moving on to launch the North London Chamber Music Course. Helen started the Little Baroque Co. whilst completing her Masters at RAM which toured the UK and Europe for over 13 years before she moved back to Australia. Helen played in the Kruger Quartet for 4 years, performing in South Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, the UK, Eastern Europe, Russia and Trinidad. After having her daughter Helen gave up touring and went on to direct the Stoke Newington Early Music Festival. She now has 2 children and is delighted to be starting the Perth String Project with Bec.

REBECCA HOOPER

Rebecca is a Perth-based Violinist and Music Educator with over 10 years’ experience teaching Music in a range of contexts. Rebecca completed both a Bachelor of Music (Performance - Violin) as well as a Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Western Australia and has since taught for the WA Department of Education as a string specialist teacher, ensemble director and classroom Music teacher.

Currently, Rebecca is practising all three of these roles teaching in one of Western Australia’s most well-regarded secondary school music programs. Recently, Rebecca has been a participant of the Australian Kodaly Certificate in Music Education; a 3-year course which focusses on high-level musicianship and pedagogy training. She has a special interest in early childhood music and providing the very best possible start, and is actively involved in the Music Education community at a local, national and international level.
